Knee arthroscopy is a surgical technique performed to detect and treat a range of potential problems in a patient’s knee joint. Such problems can include tears in ligaments and tendons or knee fractures.
If your doctor determines that you are an ideal candidate for a knee arthroscopy, you will undergo a procedure during which your surgeon makes a very small incision and inserts a miniature camera — known as an arthroscope — into your knee. The camera displays pictures on a video monitor, and your surgeon uses these detailed images to guide miniature surgical instruments that repair the injured parts of your knee.
Because these arthroscopic incisions are small compared with larger incisions used in a traditional and open surgery, knee arthroscopy typically results in less pain, less joint stiffness, and often shorter recovery.
