That's where robotic surgery comes in. Robotic surgery allows doctors to perform many types of complex procedures with more precision, flexibility and control. Robotic surgery is usually associated with minimally invasive surgery - procedures performed through tiny incisions.
Like most other surgeries, patients will be given general anesthesia, leaving you asleep and without pain.
Your Signature Medical Group surgeon will use a computer station and control the movements of the robotic arm and the attached surgical tools. Small incisions are made so that a tiny camera called an endoscope can see the operation in high resolution, three-dimension in real time. The robotic capabilities have progressed so that the robot captures the exact hand movements of your doctor and replicates them during surgery.
Here are some procedures for which robotic surgery is being used:
- Coronary artery bypass
- Cutting away cancer tissue from sensitive parts of the body such as blood vessels, nerves, or important body organs
- Gallbladder removal
- Hip replacement
- Hysterectomy
- Kidney removal
- Kidney transplant
- Mitral valve repair
- Pyeloplasty (surgery to correct ureteropelvic junction obstruction)
- Pyloroplasty
- Radical prostatectomy
- Tubal ligation
Some of Signature's surgeons use the da Vinci Surgical System.
The da Vinci system is designed to improve upon conventional laparoscopy, in which the surgeon operates while standing, using hand-held, long-shafted instruments, which have no wrists. With conventional laparoscopy, the surgeon must look up and away from the instruments, to a nearby video monitor to see an image of the target anatomy. The surgeon must also rely on a patient-side assistant to position the camera correctly.
In contrast, the da Vinci system allows the surgeon to operate from a seated position at the console, with eyes and hands positioned in line with the instruments and using controls at the console to move the instruments and camera.
