"Love your bones - protect your future.''
Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones become weak and brittle. More than 3 million people are affected in the U.S. each year. Most are women but men are susceptible too.
Dr. Gregory L. Jewell of OB/GYN Physicians, a division of Signature Medical Group, specializes in treating osteoporosis.
Dr. Jewell says women should be screened for osteoporosis at the time of menopause. If their bone density is normal, they should be screened every two years. If it's abnormal and more treatment is required, screening should occur yearly.
